This model depicts LT John Landers' P-40E1 which I built from the Otaki kit.  The model is heavily weathered and depicted parked on the sandy apron of a New Guinea airfield near a fenced-off bomb crater.  Cockpit was detailed, gun barrels replaces with tubing, wheel wells detailed slightly, and antenna wire added.  The engine was displayed with one panel removed and some minor detailing was done to it.  The mesh that can be seen in places where the sand is blown away is a form of reinforcing wire used at the time.  you can also see the same technique in one of the old Shep Payne diorama pamphlets that used to be included in Monogram model kits in the mis-1970's.

Landers later reached the rank of Colonel and served as the Commander of the 78th Fighter Group at Duxford UK in 1945, ending up with a total of 14.5 kills.  His mount in the 78th was a famous blk/white checkered-nose P-51D named "Big Beautiful Doll."
