This is our sister Recon Team in 2nd Platoon, RT Crabtree. This shot was taken about March of 67; Steve Thomas and Ron Kitzke were still patrolling with Crabtree at that time. Ski in at left in the back row next to Major Allen (Major was his name, not his rank), and Don Cowell. In front L-R are Andy Mecca, Steve Thomas, Manuel Barrerio, LCPL Reyna, Hospital Corpsman-3 "Doc" Bruce Rock, and Rufus Johnson. As you can see, some of the guys are wearing the old cotton tiger stripe uniform and others are wearing the standard jungle utilities.

One of the few pictures of my good friend Ron Kitzke and I, taken in early summer of 1967. I am on the left with Kitzke in the center and Bobby Earp on the right. It's not much of a picture but it's all I have (and thanks to Bobby Earp for sending me a copy of it). It was taken with a cheap Polaroid B&W camera; after taking the picture, you had to pull the exposed film out of the camera and coat it with some sort of "fixative" to keep it from fading. As you can see from this one, a couple spots didn't get coated very well. Earp and I are wearing the newly-acquired leaf-pattern jungle utilities. The first ones that we received didn't actually come through Marine supply channels. I'm wearing 100% standard issue camo in this shot. Earp is wearing a non US-issue shirt made by "Mr Smart" who was the proprietor of the local Vietnamese laundry-tailor-souvenir-barber shop on the combat base with issue camo trousers. Ski is still wearing the older cotton tiger stripes.

A later picture of CPL Bobby Earp. This one was taken about Sep-Oct of 1967 when he was carrying the M-79 grenade launcher. Bobby took over carrying the "blooper" after I took the M-60 machinegun from Rodriguez when he rotated home.

Two pictures of me in the jungle camouflaged utilities. In this picture, I'm wearing the same set-up as Earp in the picture above; custom-made shirt and issue trousers. |
