This sign hung at the entrance to the walkway down the side of the hill to the Force Company area. At this time, Force Co was commanded by Maj Lowry but, I the 1st Sgt had departed and a replacement had not yet arrived, hence the missing name plaque. King Dixon didn't move to Force Company for another couple months after this picture was taken.

This is what the landing zone (LZ) looked like when I arrived in early 1967 (you can see the left half in this picture. The right half was similar except that there was a drop of about 2 feet; remnants of an old rice paddy. The thing sticking out of the ground on the wooden stake is a light bulb inside an old tin can, used to (sort of) illuminate the LZ for night landings.

This is what the LZ looked like after the SeaBees paved it with blacktop late summer (perhaps early fall) of 1967. You can see that it was considerably widened and, while you can't see that much of it in this picture, it was also considerably lengthened as well. The old LZ would accommodate two CH-34s or CH-46s and two UH-1B/C "Huey" gunships. The new LZ could handle 10-12 helos at the same time
